Russia – GAC Russia has opened an office to provide ship agency and support services for vessels calling at the newly built port of Sabetta.

Sabetta sits on the Ob Bay in the Yamal Peninsula, strategically located within the Northern Sea Route. The region has a vast potential in terms of onshore and offshore oil and gas fields development and a number of considerable oil and gas projects are already at various phases of development. The port, where air temperatures drop to around -40 degrees Celsius in winter time, is ice-bound from October to June, and ice breakers have to be used to make the port accessible year-round.

The opening of an office at Sabetta – one of the key ports on the Northern Sea Route - is a natural next step in GAC Russia’s strategic positioning of itself as an agent for vessels plying the waterway. GAC now provides agency services at both Murmansk and Sabetta along the route.

GAC Russia’s Managing Director, Arkady Podkopaev, says: “This is an opportunity for us to use our vast experience in operating in extreme environments. Given the harsh weather conditions and isolation of the region, the challenges are significant and will require extremely close coordination and attention to supporting port call activities. That’s why we are developing a dedicated on-site presence and sending our most experienced personnel.”
