Long Beach, USA: 3 April 2017 – Ian Williams and his GAC Pindar crew won the World Match Racing Tour (WMRT) 53rd Congressional Cup at the weekend, beating Sweden’s Johnie Berntsson in a fifth and final winner-take-all match.
It was the first time Williams earned the winner's coveted Crimson Blazer since his two consecutive Congressional Cup wins in 2011 and 2012. It also marked a great comeback for the six-time Match Racing World Champion after hs team finished the Congressional Cup last in 2016.
After last year's defeat, Williams vowed to redeem himself, and he made good on that promise throughout last week’s five-day event. Despite a tough start, he and his GAC Pindar crew conquered Chris Steele (NZL) in the Quarter Finals, beat defending champion Taylor Canfield (ISV) in the Semi-Finals in three strokes and then won against Berntsson in the Finals.
The World Match Racing Tour now moves on to Marstrand on 3-8 July for Match Cup Sweden, one of the country’s premier sporting events, which attracts over 100,000 spectators.
