Overview
Though much of the population still depends on subsistence agriculture, Mauritania has extensive deposits of iron ore, which accounts for almost half of all exports. Oil was discovered offshore Chinguetti in 2001, making Mauritania Africa’s newest (albeit small-scale) oil producer. The country’s first deepwater port opened near Nouakchott in 1986.
